Water Wednesday – Rotakids Project

July 20th, 2017

On Wednesday, Y5 organised a super day to raise money for toilet twinning in Tanzania. It was the first Rotakids project the children have been involved in and it was a great success.

There was face-painting before school, a blue themed Mufti day, a penny collection (Spend a penny) and a cake sale at the end of the day. We also laid out the pennies on the school playground to measure how long a line they made -it was over 100 metres long!

We haven’t got a total for how much money we have managed to raise yet – there are still lots of pennies to count- but we will let you know as soon as we can.

Thank you so much to all the children, parents and staff who have supported this very worthwhile cause.

Also well done to all of Year 5. All your hard-work means that you will have made  a difference to the lives of people who live in difficult circumstances.

You have taken on the message in our topic “Make a Change” and put it into action –

Love from your very proud teacher,

Mrs Padfield xxx

July 20th, 2017

We were treated to a Jujitsu demonstration and had a go at some of the moves ourselves.

Lazy Mondays

July 20th, 2017

We had a very enjoyable morning when the Lazy Mondays came in. They played a wide range of songs for us from recent decades. It was great for the children to see a band playing live music. We were lucky enough to be chosen, along with Year 4, to take part in a music workshop where we composed a new piece of music on an animal theme.

It was great fun. A huge thank you to all the Lazy Mondays.

Rotakids Annual Conference

July 7th, 2017

Our Rotakids Officers attended the annual Rotakids Conference at Lancaster House Hotel.

They took part in a number of workshops. The one shown in the photographs below was all about the treatment of TB. They had the chance to experience a little of what it is like to have to be in an iron lung.

Make a Change – protest songs

May 14th, 2017

We have been really enjoying listening to protest songs. So far we have listened to and sung:

Free Nelson Mandela by The Specials

Something Inside So Strong – Labi Sifre

We have talked about the background of each song and discussed the message they contain.

Please find the lyrics below for you to sing along to at home!

Make a Change Song Lyrics

Make a Change – Science

May 14th, 2017

As part of our Make a Change topic we have been conducting lots of  science investigations looking at reversible and irreversible changes.

The Insta Snow was the most exciting change when we tried adding water to different substances.

The children are being encouraged to look for changes at home- so maybe share your cooking with them so that they can identify changes eg to eggs

Summer Term!

April 23rd, 2017

Where has the time gone?  Summer Term already.

Please check out our Topic Information page for this term’s topic web.

Hopefully we will get lots of sunshine in the coming weeks.

Macbeth drama

March 27th, 2017

Today we took advantage of the beautiful sunshine and went outside to role play the next part of Macbeth.

We decided to freeze-frame the part where Macbeth thinks he sees Birnam Wood move towards Dunsinane Castle, thereby realising ¬†another of the witches’ prophesies.

Healthy Heroes

March 27th, 2017

We began making meals for our Healthy Heroes topic last week.

The vegetarian group decided to make vegetable lasagne with fruit salad and chocolate sauce for pudding.

The Gluten-free group made spiced minced beef tacos with side salad and fruit meringues with honey yogurt for pudding.

Both the meals were delicious and were well-balanced. A huge thank you to Tracey and Laura for making the meals with the children. ¬† ¬†ūüôā

This week will be the turn of the nut allergy and milk allergy group.
